All the handicrafts listed in this website have been bought directly from carvers themselves at the prices they have asked for. For this reason, some prices are slightly more than others, even though the pieces look similar. Every piece is individually hand-carved without the use of machinery, so you can be assured of a work of art that is both beautiful and unique. The idea of getting into this type of business has been with me for a long time. I have always wanted to help my people in the rural villages in some small ways. Having grown up in a remote rural village in Solomon Islands, gone through high school and then through tertiary education in USA, I believe that the quality of rural village life, at least in the Pacific, surpasses in many ways the quality of life in developed countries. People do not have too much material things but also do not have as many worries either. They just need a little bit of income to meet their basic needs. And little things like selling handicrafts contribute towards this in a very important way. In line with my environmental and resource conservation and management interests, I strongly believe that promoting small scale rural industries where the benefit goes directly to the people is a more sustainable form of development. I do not believe in big resource harvesting operations where the financial benefit for both the resource owners and the government is not only minimal but environmentally devastating. Marovo Lagoon in Solomon Islands, where most of the current handicrafts are from, was proposed for a World Heritage site in the 1990s. Today, Marovo Lagoon is overtaken with mindless and barely monitored logging operations by mostly Malaysian Logging Companies because of a few individuals who want to get rich fast without weighing the cost for everybody else. Help me to help my people who are trying to help themselves by selling their handicrafts.
